Prayer to St. Jude
by Jacklyn Attaway
Most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend
of…
Oak blossoms dizzying.
Dizzied with pollen.
The Church honors and invokes thee as the patron of
hopeless cases, of things despaired of…
Following you is like walking a trail of light glinting on
the surface of water. This path
shimmers and wavers with deceptive promise. If the water is still enough, the mirage will endure,
steady, a line on a map, an elegant ladder. But wind and wave soon reveal the dangerous truth.
Make use, I implore thee, of that privilege accorded to
thee, to bring visible and God sped hope where hope is almost despaired of…
And I thought of a moment. A button one could push. A lever one could pull. And time would not necessarily stop, but all the impossible
things would become possible, if only for that one indeterminate moment.
Come to me in that I may receive the consolation and
succor of…
And the path of light-on-water behind you would grow firm
for my feet, would materialize for my walking. And I could step through gold and fog and wave crest to you.
Saint Jude, Hope of the Hopeless, Pray for me.
